Texas Tech University

Assistant Director/PhD Student, Usability Research Lab

We're looking to bring on board an assistant director/PhD student for the Usability Research Lab at Texas Tech beginning in the Fall, 2015. If accepted into the technical communication and rhetoric (TCR) PhD program here, this new assistant director would work in the lab to carry out or support UX-related research projects, including design. The URL created an eye tracking system that it spun off into a start-up company, Grinbath, in 2011, so we make as well as evaluate. In addition, the new assistant director would have the chance to teach undergraduate UX, as well as corporate UX certification sessions offered through the URL.

The position is guaranteed for three years, and additional funding will be available after that, including dissertation completion fellowships. Competitive candidates, in addition to meeting the admission requirements of Texas Tech and the TCR program, would have proven experience in UX-related research, practical work, or a combination of both. They should apply to the TCR program but also contact me directly to provide their vita, letter of interest, and the names of a couple of references who can speak to their abilities.

This is a great opportunity for anyone interested in a PhD that allows them to conduct intensive research, including a dissertation, on UX grounded in technical communication. There is a rich history of TCers influencing the development of usability and now UX, including Barnum, Redish, Howard, Ramey, Chisnell, Quesenbery, Hackos, and on and on....

Should anyone have more questions they can contact me directly at brian.still@ttu.edu. Applications for the position and beginning PhD studies in TCR in Fall 2015 should be submitted by the end of December.

There are also a number of new teaching fellowships, with decent stipends and also with opportunities to work in our other labs or support/teach any number of undergraduate courses we offer. You can head to the Graduate Fellowship Page to learn more.
