Poetry: the Short and Long of It

Staff

One of the basic distinctions that can be made between types of poetry is that between the lyric (a short personal poem) and the narrative (a poem that tells a story and is frequently long). In this class, students will look at short poems for half the semester and long ones for the rest of the term.

Drama is a unique genre that has the concision of poetry and elements of prose fiction. Drama can be read as literary texts or viewed as performances, and its presentation can influence the way we interpret it. The course has a roughly historical approach that looks at the stylized elements of pre-modern drama, the realistic elements of 19th-century plays, and the varied elements of 20th-century theater.

Introduction to Technical Writing

English 2311 assists students in developing the writing ability required by their future professions. Six to nine writing assignments are required. Students in this class will analyze the communication situation fully and accurately (needs, audiences, uses, and constraints); gather, interpret, and document information logically, efficiently, and ethically; develop professional work and teamwork habits; and design usable, clear, persuasive, accessible workplace documents.

Introduction to Creative Writing

In this course, we will focus our energies on composing and revising poems and short stories, paying special attention to the literary features of each and developing our skills in the craft of writing. This process will involve not only writing but also a good deal of reading the work of both established writers and fellow students. No prior experience writing poetry and fiction is necessary. Prepare yourself to write imaginatively, read thoughtfully, discuss actively, and have fun doing it!
