Summer Reading Program Book Proposal Form
PROGRAM GOALS
- To stimulate discussion and critical thinking around a common book’s themes
- To introduce students to academic life at Texas Tech University
- To enhance a sense of community between students, faculty, and staff
- Provide a common experience for incoming students
BOOK SELECTION COMMITTEE
Summer Reading Program Book selection committee: faculty and staff from the Rawls College of Business, College of Visual and Performing Arts, the Department of English, Residence Life, Women’s Studies, Office of the President, Student Judicial Programs, College of Mass Communications, and the Center for Campus LifeBOOK SELECTION PROCESS
Any individual/college/department has the opportunity to submit a proposal for consideration for the freshman summer reading text choice. All proposals will be submitted to the Summer Reading Program committee comprised of faculty, staff and students. The SRP committee will, based on the quality of the proposal and the appropriateness of the book to meet the above stated goals, determine the final book selection and notify all colleges/departments who have submitted proposals. In the absence of proposals that best meet the program goals, the SRP committee may select an appropriate book of their choice.
KEY BOOK CONSIDERATIONS
- Length (less than 300 pages)
- Interesting to students as a summer reading
- Relevant topics for incoming students
- Potential for integration in other areas of the curriculum
- Cost efficient for students (less than $15/book)
- Any genre (including fiction and non-fiction) are open to consideration
- The book should not be discipline specific, in that it reaches a general audience
BOOK DISCUSSION LEADERS
In order to fully accomplish the program goals listed above the SRP Committee is always looking for individuals who would be willing to lead a group of first-year students in a discussion centered on the chosen book title. If you or someone in your department would be interested in leading a book discussion please include that information along with your book submission or contact Zach Manning in the Center for Campus Life at zach.manning@ttu.edu or by phone at 742-5433.
TIMELINE
Proposals due for book recommendations November 15
Final decision of text by SRP committee January 2008
All proposals should be submitted by November 15,2007 for consideration.
