What is University Convocation?
In the context of higher education, convocation is literally defined as an assembly of members of the college community, who come together for any or all of the following purposes:
a) To officially welcome new students to the college,
b) To celebrate new students’ entry into higher education,
c) To formally induct new students into the college,
d) To articulate the institution’s mission and expectations to new students and,
e) To build a sense of group identity or community among members of the entering class.
University Convocation at Texas Tech University is the official welcome for all new freshman and transfer students. In many ways this ceremony marks the beginning of their collegiate journey and ushers them into the community of scholars. Some elements of convocation resemble commencement (graduation) which marks the culmination of a student’s education at Texas Tech University. For new undergraduate students, this is an opportunity to hear strong academic messages while marking the beginning of their TTU experience which will culminate at commencement. New faculty will be exposed to the history and traditions of Texas Tech University and experience firsthand TTU’s commitment to the education of its students. For new staff, University Convocation will assist them in seeing their place as educators and mentors within the learning community at TTU. At the conclusion of the ceremony, faculty, students, and staff will exit to the President’s Picnic. Food is free to all.
