Dr. Eric Bruning

Education

  • Ph.D. Meteorology, University of Oklahoma, Norman, 2008

Research

  • Storm Electrification

I specialize in the relationships of storm electrification and lightning to the thermodynamics, microphysics, kinematics, and dynamics of thunderstorms. Observational studies of lightning facilitate knowledge transfer to forecasters in the operational use of lightning data, which is expected to to grow with the launch of the Geostationary Lightning Mapper on GOES-R. TTU operates a VHF Lightning Mapping Array, which facilitates observational studies of lightning, including the impact of environmental thermodynamics on electrification and the conditions for lightning initiation and propagation. Other interests include data visualization, the Python programming language, and the history and philosophy of science.

Courses

I teach a range of physical meteorology courses, which at the graduate level have an emphaisis on scientific computing integrated with practical data processing and concrete practice with traditional theory.

  • ATMO 3301 - General Meteorology
  • ATMO 5321 - Cloud and Precipitation Physics
  • ATMO 5331 - Analysis of Geophysical Data Fields
