World, Populated Places, Cities
This layer contains primary cities and populated places around the world. This polygon file is intended for medium scale thematic mapping and analysis.
The spatial data were obtained from Natural Earth. . The data are suitable for making relatively generalized maps of countries and regions and are intended for use at a scale no larger than 1:50,000,000. Attributes were modified to include scalerank, name, and a variety of identification, description, and population information. The coordinate system of this data is WGS 1984.
"Population estimates were derived from the LANDSCAN dataset maintained and distributed by the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. These data were converted from raster to vector and pixels with fewer than 200 persons per square kilometer were removed from the dataset as they were classified as rural. Once urban pixels were selected, these pixels were aggregated into contiguous units. Concurrently Thiessen polygons were created based on the selected city points. The Thiessen polygons were used to intersect the contiguous city boundaries to produce bounded areas for the cities. As a result, our estimates capture a metropolitan and micropolitan populations per city regardless of administrative units." - Natural Earth
