Master of Arts in Communication Studies


Program Description

Graduate students in our program take a minimum of 36 hours of coursework in fulfillment of the masters degree. In order to complete a masters degree, graduate students select a thesis or comprehensive examination option as a culminating application and demonstration of their mastery in Communication Studies course content. The graduate program for the masters degree in communication studies requires a minimum of 30 semester hours of coursework plus 6 hours of thesis. A non-thesis option requires a minimum of 36 hours of coursework, a written comprehensive exam, and an oral defense. Required courses are COMS 5300, 5301, 5305, 5306, and 5307.

Departmental Application Instructions: Step 1: As you apply for acceptance to the COMS masters program you must first fill out application forms for the Graduate School/Graduate Admissions. For application to Graduate School you may contact Graduate School/Graduate Admissionshttp://www.depts.ttu.edu/gradschool/prospect.php) in Holden Hall (phone: 806 742-2781). Step 2: To apply to the Communication Studies graduate program, you need to contact Dr. Amy Heuman (806 742-3912 ora.heuman@ttu.edu), or the main COMS office in room 262 of the Mass Communication building (806 742-3911). Your application to the COMS department requires 1-2 writing samples, 3 letters of recommendation, a purpose statement, and a resume or vitae (if you have one). Step 3: If you are also interested in being a Teaching Assistant in our department, you need to fill out and turn in a TA application form to our department. You may either access our Online TA Application Form or get a hard copy.

How To Apply


1) Apply to Graduate School : Fill out the online application at Apply Texas.

2) Pay your application fee: $60 initial application fee, $50 for each subsequent application (including changes of entry date, add/change program, or readmission). Application fees may be paid via ApplyTexas at the time of application submission or by credit card on our website.

3) Contact the Graduate Program Coordinator in your prospective department. Many departments have separate application requirements and deadlines, and the Graduate Program Coordinator will be able to assist you in your application process.

4) Send application requirements, from all of the colleges and universities that you have attended to Texas Tech University Graduate School.
