Program Description

This program offers advanced study in literature, creative writing, and linguistics. Applicants for the M.A. in English complete 30 hours of graduate courses and a thesis, or 36 hours of coursework and a portfolio. Areas of concentration include early and later British and American literatures, Digital Humanities, CLGT (Comparative Literature, Globalization, and Translation), creative writing, linguistics, Book History, Film & Media Studies, Nineteenth-century Studies, and LSJE (Literature, Social Justice, and Environment). Supporting work is available in bibliography, theory and criticism, teaching college composition, and technical and professional writing. Reading knowledge of one foreign language is required. In their final semester in the M.A. program, thesis students must successfully complete an oral defense and non-thesis students must submit a portfolio of their work for faculty review.

Recommendation Letter Instructions: All letters of recommendation will be submitted online after you have submitted the names and email addresses of your recommenders through our application system.

Writing Sample Instructions: For literature or linguistics students, an 8-12 page critical sample is required. For creative writing students, a creative sample of similar length is required.

For domestic applicants, there is no specific Graduate Admissions deadline, although we encourage domestic applicants to apply at least three (3) months in advance of the semester to which they want to apply.

How To Apply

2) Pay your application fee: $60 initial application fee, $50 for each subsequent application (including changes of entry date, add/change program, or readmission). Application fees may be paid via ApplyTexas at the time of application submission or by credit card on our website.

3) Contact the Graduate Program Coordinator in your prospective department. Many departments have separate application requirements and deadlines, and the Graduate Program Coordinator will be able to assist you in your application process.

4) Send application requirements, from all of the colleges and universities that you have attended to Texas Tech University Graduate School.
