Master of Arts in Economics


Program Description

Non-Thesis Plan. The non-thesis plan requires successful completion of 12 courses (36 credit hours) and passing of a comprehensive written examination for the Master of Arts in Economics degree. The coursework includes ECO 5311 (Macro theory) and ECO 5312 (Micro theory), 21 hours of economic electives, and 9 hours of approved general electives. Thesis Option. The thesis option plan requires successful completion of 12 courses (36 credit hours), writing an MA thesis, and successful final defense of the MA thesis. The coursework includes ECO 5311 (Macro theory) and ECO 5312 (Micro theory), ECO 6000 (6 hours), 15 hours of economic electives, and 9 hours of approved general electives.

Departmental Application Instructions: The department does not have any additional requirements (separate application form, separate application for financial aid, etc) besides the materials required by the Graduate School. The department does not require a Personal Statement, Purpose of Study, or Letters of Recommendation, however a prospective student is encouraged to supply these supporting materials if she or he so desires. If the applicant wants to send those, please do so directly to the Graduate Advisor by mail or email. The applicant does not need to send them to the Graduate School.

How To Apply


1) Apply to Graduate School : Fill out the online application at Apply Texas.

2) Pay your application fee: $60 initial application fee, $50 for each subsequent application (including changes of entry date, add/change program, or readmission). Application fees may be paid via ApplyTexas at the time of application submission or by credit card on our website.

3) Contact the Graduate Program Coordinator in your prospective department. Many departments have separate application requirements and deadlines, and the Graduate Program Coordinator will be able to assist you in your application process.

4) Send application requirements, from all of the colleges and universities that you have attended to Texas Tech University Graduate School.
