Program Description

The Doctor of Philosophy in History program requires sixty (60) hours beyond the BA/BS degree. Thirty (30) of those hours must be taken at Texas Tech University. Students select three fields, one of which is divided into two subject emphases: a major geographic field which is divided into two emphases (10 total hours), a secondary geographic field (9 hours), and a thematic field (9 hours). Students are also required to complete twelve (12) additional hours (two seminars, World Historiography, and The Nature of History), show proficiency in one foreign language, successfully pass comprehensive exams in their four subject areas, enroll in at least twelve (12) dissertation hours, and write and defend a dissertation of original research.

Domestic deadlines

For domestic applicants, there is no specific Graduate Admissions deadline, although we encourage domestic applicants to apply at least three (3) months in advance of the semester to which they want to apply.

How To Apply

1) Apply to Graduate School : Fill out the online application at Apply Texas.

2) Pay your application fee: $60 initial application fee, $50 for each subsequent application (including changes of entry date, add/change program, or readmission). Application fees may be paid via ApplyTexas at the time of application submission or by credit card on our website.

3) Contact the Graduate Program Coordinator in your prospective department. Many departments have separate application requirements and deadlines, and the Graduate Program Coordinator will be able to assist you in your application process.

4) Send application requirements, from all of the colleges and universities that you have attended to Texas Tech University Graduate School.
