Degree : Master of Arts

Major : History

Program Description

The Master of Arts degree in History at Texas Tech University requires thirty-six (36) hours beyond the BA/BS degree. There are two MA tracks – the MA Academic Preparatory Track and the Professional Enrichment (non-thesis) Preparatory Track. For both tracks, students must complete a minimum of twenty-four (24) hours within the Texas Tech Department of History. For the Academic Preparatory Track, students choose a geographic area of concentration between U.S., Europe, or World. Within that field, students complete twelve (12) hours. Twelve (12) hours of elective courses are required. Of those hours, six (6) must be outside of the student’s chosen geographic field. There are two required courses: HIST 5304: The Nature of History and HIST 6301: Research Methods Seminar. Proficiency in a foreign language is required as is writing and defending a thesis of original research. The Professional Enrichment Preparatory (non-thesis) Track MA also requires thirty-six (36) hours of coursework. Only HIST 5304 is required, but students must take one 6000-level course as part of the 36 hours. Students in the non-thesis track have the option to divide their coursework in two ways: three fields of nine (9) hours each or two fields of twelve (12) and fifteen (15) hours each. There are six (6) additional hours of elective courses required. No foreign language or thesis is required, and all students must successfully pass comprehensive exams in their chosen fields.
