Master of Arts in History


Program Description

The Master of Arts degree at Texas Tech University requires thirty-six (36) hours beyond the BA/BS degree. There are two MA tracks – the MA Academic Preparatory Track and the Professional Enrichment Preparatory Track. For both tracks, students must complete a minimum of twenty-four (24) hours must be taken in the Texas Tech Department of History. For the Academic Preparatory Track, students choose a geographic area of concentration between U.S., Europe, or World. Within that field, students complete twelve (12) hours. In addition, twelve (12) additional hours of elective courses are required (six (6) of which are required to be outside of the student’s chosen geographic field), six (6) hours of coursework in two required courses (The Nature of History and a research methods seminar), proficiency in a foreign language, and writing and defending a thesis of original research. The Professional Enrichment Preparatory Track non-thesis MA requires thirty-six (36) hours divided into three fields of nine (9) hours each with three faculty representatives, or two fields of twelve (12) and fifteen (15) hours each with two faculty representatives. No foreign language or thesis is required, only one other course (The Nature of History) is required for all students, and all students must successfully pass comprehensive exams in their chosen fields.

How To Apply


1) Apply to Graduate School : Fill out the online application at Apply Texas.

2) Pay your application fee: $60 initial application fee, $50 for each subsequent application (including changes of entry date, add/change program, or readmission). Application fees may be paid via ApplyTexas at the time of application submission or by credit card on our website.

3) Contact the Graduate Program Coordinator in your prospective department. Many departments have separate application requirements and deadlines, and the Graduate Program Coordinator will be able to assist you in your application process.
