Program Description

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics is one of the largest departments on campus, with 47 tenure track faculty slots and about 92 graduate students that are supported full time as graduate teaching assistants or research assistants. The department awarded its first masters degrees in 1930 and since then over 900 masters degrees have been awarded. The Ph.D. program was approved in 1965 and the first doctorate was awarded in 1967. As of August 2014, the department had awarded approximately 190 Ph.D.s. The scholarly productivity and reputation of the faculty and the effectiveness of the graduate program is reflected in its classification as a Group II mathematics department as determined by the American Mathematical Society and based on data provided by the National Research Council. The Department of Mathematics and Statistics offers a Master of Arts, a Master of Science, and a Doctor of Philosophy degrees in mathematics.

Recommendation Letter Instructions: Three letters of recommendation are required for applicants interested in being considered for a Teaching Assistantship. Letters must be physically mailed to the department. Electronic letters will not be accepted.

Writing Sample Instructions: A short purpose statement explaining why you want to complete a graduate degree in mathematics is required for students interested in a Teaching Assistantship.

How To Apply


1) Apply to Graduate School : Fill out the online application at Apply Texas.

2) Pay your application fee: $60 initial application fee, $50 for each subsequent application (including changes of entry date, add/change program, or readmission). Application fees may be paid via ApplyTexas at the time of application submission or by credit card on our website.

3) Contact the Graduate Program Coordinator in your prospective department. Many departments have separate application requirements and deadlines, and the Graduate Program Coordinator will be able to assist you in your application process.
