Program Description

The Department of Mechanical Engineering offers programs leading to the Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering and the Doctor of Philosophy degrees. Research is conducted within the traditional core areas of solid mechanics and materials, thermofluids and heat transfer, dynamics and controls, and design. The department offers three Master of Science options: The thesis option requires a minimum of 30 hours of graduate credit, of which 24 are earned by satisfactorily completing courses and a minimum of 6 are earned by thesis research. Under this option, the course work program of study is tailored by the student and research advising professor to prepare the student for conducting the thesis research. Students should allow a minimum of eighteen months to complete this option. The report option requires 36 hours of graduate credit, of which 33 hours are earned by satisfactorily completing courses and 3 hours are earned by the report. Under this option, the course work program of study is tailored by the student and research advising professor to prepare the student for conducting an independent research project requiring a report. Students should allow a minimum of fifteen months to complete this option. The coursework option requires 36 hours of graduate credit consisting entirely of graduate courses. Under this option, the course work program of study is tailored by the student and Graduate Advisor according to the desired core area of study. Students should allow allow a minimum of fifteen months to complete this option. The Doctor of Philosophy degree is earned by completing a minimum of 60 hours of graduate credit course work, exclusive of the dissertation. Graduate credits earned while completing a Master of Science program are applicable to the Ph.D degree. Programs of study are developed by the dissertation advising committee and the student to meet the research objectives. Students should allow a minimum of three years beyond the Master of Science degree to complete this program.

How To Apply


1) Apply to Graduate School : Fill out the online application at Apply Texas.

2) Pay your application fee: $60 initial application fee, $50 for each subsequent application (including changes of entry date, add/change program, or readmission). Application fees may be paid via ApplyTexas at the time of application submission or by credit card on our website.

3) Contact the Graduate Program Coordinator in your prospective department. Many departments have separate application requirements and deadlines, and the Graduate Program Coordinator will be able to assist you in your application process.
