Program Description

The Master of Music Education degree with the thesis option consists of a minimum of 30 hours of graduate work including a thesis. The non-thesis track consists of 36 hours of course work which culminates in a Comprehensive Oral Examination. Both degree tracks center around three music education core courses: Foundations of Music Education, Learning and Music, and Tests, Measurements and Evaluations in Music. Remaining hours are determined according to the skills, goals and aims of the student.

Letters of Recommendation required: 3

Recommendation Letter Instructions: Decision Desk provides an option to email the recommender a request to submit a letter of recommendation. The recommender can upload their letter to Decision Desk. Letters of recommendation can also be mailed to the department address listed above, or emailed directly to Dr. Michael Stoune

Writing Samples Required: No

Writing Sample Instructions: The writing sample may be a term paper, article submitted for publication, chapter of a thesis, or an extensive Statement of Purpose.

Departmental Application Instructions: School of Music application is through Decision Desk and the link found on the School of Music website. Students must apply to BOTH the School of Music AND the Graduate School.

Previous Work Instructions: Recorded samples of performance, conducting of both rehearsal and performance, teaching individual and group, or recent compositions. Contact the division chair for specific information about audition submissions.

How To Apply


1) Apply to Graduate School : Fill out the online application at Apply Texas.

2) Pay your application fee: $60 initial application fee, $50 for each subsequent application (including changes of entry date, add/change program, or readmission). Application fees may be paid via ApplyTexas at the time of application submission or by credit card on our website.

3) Contact the Graduate Program Coordinator in your prospective department. Many departments have separate application requirements and deadlines, and the Graduate Program Coordinator will be able to assist you in your application process.

4) Send application requirements, from all of the colleges and universities that you have attended to Texas Tech University Graduate School.
