Program Description

Doctor of Musical Arts degree programs include: Composition, Conducting (Choral, Orchestral and Wind), Performance (all areas)and Piano Pedagogy. The Doctor of Musical Arts degree is a 45-hour program (minimum) oriented toward professional practice in music emphasizing the creation or performance of musical works and the application and transmission of knowledge about musical works. A nondissertation program, the degree culminates in four doctoral performance projects which are designed to suit the professional interests and aspirations of the student. Additional information may be obtained from the School of Music. The degree consists of 45 hours of coursework, a qualifying examination, and four performance or pedagogy projects which take the place of a dissertation. (For degrees involving a dissertation, please refer to the PhD in Fine Arts.)

Letters of Recommendation required: 3

Recommendation Letter Instructions: The Decision Desk application provides an option to email the recommender a request to submit a letter of recommendation. The recommender can upload their letter on to Decision Desk. Letters of recommendation can also be mailed to the department address listed above or emailed directly to Dr. Michael Stoune.

Resume Required: Yes

Writing Samples Required: Yes

Writing Sample Instructions: May be a term paper, article submitted for publication, chapter of a thesis, or an extensive Statement of Purpose.

The Office of Graduate and International Admissions does not have a specific deadline for domestic applications; we strongly recommend that you have all of the required application materials in by the date listed below.

How To Apply


1) Apply to Graduate School : Fill out the online application at Apply Texas.

2) Pay your application fee: $60 initial application fee, $50 for each subsequent application (including changes of entry date, add/change program, or readmission). Application fees may be paid via ApplyTexas at the time of application submission or by credit card on our website.

3) Contact the Graduate Program Coordinator in your prospective department. Many departments have separate application requirements and deadlines, and the Graduate Program Coordinator will be able to assist you in your application process.

4) Send application requirements, from all of the colleges and universities that you have attended to Texas Tech University Graduate School.
