Program Description

Students majoring in Personal Financial Planning receive comprehensive instruction in the theoretical foundations of financial planning including investments, retirement planning, financial counseling practices, risk management and tax planning. The doctoral program at Texas Tech provides a rigorous foundation in theory and research methods in individual financial decision making to prepare students to teach and conduct research in financial planning at an academic institution. The Texas Tech PhD program is the first and only PhD in Personal Financial Planning. Students who complete the PhD will be eligible to sit for the CFP Certification Examination.

Recommendation Letter Instructions: All letters of recommendation will be submitted online after you have submitted the names and email addresses of your recommenders through our application system. Preferably from both academics and industry if applicant has industry experience.

Writing Sample Instructions: PhD applicants must attach a written statement including topics such as your personal information, career objectives, areas of research interest, teaching interests, and teaching philosophy.

For domestic applicants, there is no specific Graduate Admissions deadline, although we encourage domestic applicants to apply at least three (3) months in advance of the semester to which they want to apply.

How To Apply

1) Apply to Graduate School : Fill out the online application at Apply Texas.

2) Pay your application fee: $60 initial application fee, $50 for each subsequent application (including changes of entry date, add/change program, or readmission). Application fees may be paid via ApplyTexas at the time of application submission or by credit card on our website.

3) Contact the Graduate Program Coordinator in your prospective department. Many departments have separate application requirements and deadlines, and the Graduate Program Coordinator will be able to assist you in your application process.

4) Send application requirements, from all of the colleges and universities that you have attended to Texas Tech University Graduate School.
