Graduate Student Research Poster Competition

The purpose of the Graduate Student Research Competition is to encourage students to:+

SUBJECT OF PRESENTATION

Any basic or applied research will be considered for entry in the competition, if conducted by the graduate student as part of his/her graduate education indicated by the division in which they are competing. Posters related to programs or design may also be used if this style is common in their corresponding field. The presentation may contain information that has been presented at other regional or national meetings, but cannot contain material previously used in this competition.

Online Registration

Registration must be completed online no later than March 2nd (see link below).

Abstracts

An abstract must be submitted no later than March 4th.

Abstracts are limited to 150-200 words and should contain a brief description of the research.

If it becomes necessary to limit the number of entries, the Graduate Student Research Poster Competition Committee will be empowered to make that decision soon after receipt of entries and abstracts. Notification of acceptance of entry will be made as soon as possible.

PLACE AND CONDITIONS OF PRESENTATIONS

We would like to express our appreciation to the Texas Tech Museum for hosting our poster session. Judges will be viewing posters on Friday, March 22nd beginning at 11:00 a.m. at the Sculpture Court in the Texas Tech University Museum (off of 4th and Indiana Ave.).

Judges will review posters with the contestant present. Contestants will not give a formal oral presentation in the traditional sense; however, they should be prepared to answer questions from judges and attendees concerning objectives, methods, design, results and interpretation of research presented. If participant is not available during the designated time the participant needs to make arrangements with the poster competition coordinator. If the coordinator is not notified by March 25th, the coordinator is not responsible for making arrangements. Poster presentations should be completely assembled on Monday, March 18th between 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. in the Texas Tech University Museum – Sculpture Court.

Poster Boards

The poster board surface of 3 feet high by 4 feet wide will be provided to each contestant. None of the material (label, abstract, figures, charts, tables, summary, etc.) shall extend beyond the border of the 3′ x 4′ poster board surface and the poster will be considered ineligible for awards if material extends beyond the 3′ x 4′ limit. Posters need to be 34 inches high by 46 inches wide, which allows 2 inches for margins.

The Graduate School will provide “free poster printing” for participants. Contact John Baker (john.f.baker@ttu.edu) or Lora Lopez lora.lopez@ttu.edu for details. Contestants will also be provided velcro mounting materials.

Evaluating the Presentations

  1. The Graduate Student Research Poster Committee shall evaluate abstracts and poster presentations for each division. The chairman of the Graduate Student Research Poster Committee will tabulate scores, but will not be a judge.
  2. Judges will visit each exhibit in a group and evaluate posters using procedures set up by the committee chairman. At the conclusion of the competition, judges will meet with the chairman of the committee to select a winner.
  3. Whenever possible, the judges will not be from Departments represented in the competition, nor will major professors of contestants serve as judges.
