Configuring Windows XP VPN Clients

Please print out these instructions and follow the steps on your computer.

Step 1:  Verify that your TTU Windows Domain Account is Active:

  1. Go to http://www.eRaider.ttu.edu and log in using your eRaider username and password.
     
  2. Click on the Manager your eRaider Account link.
     
  3. Under the eRaider Account Manager banner, there will be a section on the right titled Windows Domain Account.  In this section, verify that you have an entry named TTU.EDU - Active that has a small bright green circle next to it.  If you do, your Windows Domain Account is active and you can proceed to the next section.
     
  4. If you see a small dark green circle and an entry named TTU.EDU - Inactive instead, you will need to activate your domain account before continuing.  To do this, click on the entry named TTU.EDU - Inactive.  This will bring up a new screen that should allow you to activate your domain account.  Follow the instructions presented on the screen to activate your domain account.
     
  5. Once you have followed the instructions on the screen, click on the General Information button on the left and verify that your account is now showing up as TTU.EDU - Active with a small bright green circle next to it in the Windows Domain Account section on the right side of the page.

Step 2:  Install and configure your VPN client:

NOTE: PLEASE DO NOT MAKE ANY OTHER CHANGES TO YOUR CONFIGURATION THAN THOSE SPECIFIED IN THESE INSTRUCTIONS.

NOTE:  It is VERY important that users install current service packs and critical updates prior to configuring your VPN connection (Microsoft Windows Update).


How to Setup a New VPN Connection

  1. From the Start Menu, open the Control Panel.

    Note that in Windows XP, it is possible that your Control Panel window will only show nine icons instead of closer to thirty icons.  If this is the case, click Switch to Classic View in the upper left corner of the window to return the Control Panel window to the classic view.  Otherwise, proceed to the next step.
     
  2. Now choose Network Connections.
     
  3. Now select Create New Connection.

    Note:  If you are using Windows XP with Service Pack 2, you should click on the New Connection Wizard icon.
     
  4. The Network Connection Wizard will appear. Click the Next button.
     
  5. Choose Connect to the network at my workplace., and click the Next button.
     
  6. Choose Virtual Private Network connection, and click the Next button.
     
  7. Type TTUnet in the name field for this connection and click Next.
     
  8. Choose Do not dial the initial connection, and click the Next button.
     
  9. Type vpn.ttu.edu in Hostname field, and then click the Next button.
     
  10. If you want this connection to be made available to all users on your computer, check Anyone's use, otherwise check My use only. Then click the Next button.
     
  11. Check the Add a shortcut to my desktop if you desire. Click the finish button.
     
  12. In the Connect TTUnet VPN dialog box, enter your eRaider username and eRaider password and click the Properties button.
     
  13. Click on the Security Tab. Select Typical settings, Require secured password, and Require data encryption.
     
  14. Click on the Networking tab. Set the Type of VPN server to Point to Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP).

    Note:  If you are using a Cable Modem, DSL, or using any other non-Texas Tech service provider for your commercial Internet service, continue with these steps; otherwise, go to Step 18.

    Select Internet Protocol and click on the Properties button.
     

  15. Check Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically. Click on the Advanced button.
     
  16. Uncheck Use default gateway on remote network. Click the OK button.
    Note:
      If you are setting up a VPN connection to use the TTU online Library resources, you will need to check the Use default gateway on remote network checkbox.
     
  17. Click the OK button.
     
  18. Click the OK button.
     
  19. Click the Connect button. When connected you will see a connection icon in the bottom right-hand corner of your screen.

Illustrated Instructions

Step 1:  From the Start Menu, open the Control Panel.

Step 2:  Now choose Network Connections. Control Panel

 

Step 3:  Now select Create New Connection.

Note:  If you are using Windows XP with Service Pack 2, you should click on the New Connection Wizard icon.

Step 4:  The Network Connection Wizard will appear. Click the Next button. Network Connection Wizard

 

Step 5:  Choose Connect to the network at my workplace., and click the Next button. Network Connection Wizard

 

Step 6:  Choose Virtual Private Network connection, and click the Next button. Network Connection Wizard

 

Step 7:  Type TTUnet in the name field for this connection and click Next. Network Connection Wizard

Step 12:  In the Connect TTUnet VPN dialog box, enter your eRaider username and eRaider password and click the Properties button. Connect TTUnet

 

Step 13:  Click on the Security Tab. Select Typical settings, Require secured password, and Require data encryption. TTUnet Properties

 

Step 14:  Click on the Networking tab. Set the Type of VPN server to Point to Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP).

Note:  If you are using a Cable Modem, DSL, or using any other non-Texas Tech service provider for your commercial Internet service, continue with these steps; otherwise, go to Step 18.

Select Internet Protocol and click on the Properties button.

 

Step 15:  Check Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically. Click on the Advanced button.  

 

Step 16:  Uncheck Use default gateway on remote network. Click the OK button.

Note:  If you are setting up a VPN connection to use the TTU online Library resources, you will need to check the Use default gateway on remote network checkbox.

Step 17:  Click the OK button. IP Properties

 

Step 18:  Click the OK button. TTUnet Properties

 

Step 19:  Click the Connect button. When connected you will see a connection icon in the bottom right-hand corner of your screen. Connect TTUnet

How to Use a Previously Created VPN Connection:

  4. You will now be prompted to create the shortcut on your desktop.  Click Yes and the shortcut will be created.
     
  5. To use the VPN connection, close or minimize all open windows until you get to the Desktop.  You will now see a shortcut titled TTUnet.  Double click on it to open the VPN connection window.
     
  6. The VPN connection window will now open.  To connect, make sure you have entered your eRaider username and password in the username and password fields.  If you would like to save your username and password for later use so that you don't have to re-enter it every time, check the box for "Save this username and password for the following users:" and then select "Me only".  Now click on the Connect button to connect to the TTUnet VPN.
     
  7. Once the connection has been established, a small connectivity icon will appear near the clock in the system tray in the bottom right hand corner of your window indicating that you are now connected.

Illustrated Instructions

Step 7:  Once the connection has been established, a small connectivity icon will appear near the clock in the system tray in the bottom right hand corner of your window indicating that you are now connected.
