You should install Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) to better defend against viruses, worms, and hackers. Its enhanced security infrastructure provides increased manageability and control for IT professionals and an improved experience for Windows XP users.

On Wednesday, August 25, Microsoft began to broadcast Windows XP Service Pack 2 to Windows Automatic Update subscribers worldwide at a rate of 25,000 computers per day for an undetermined length of time. Since the updates are provided randomly, there is no way to determine which computers on the TTU campus will get updated by Windows Automatic Update during that period.  To complete the installation of Service Pack 2, follow these instructions:

Note:  You must have Automatic Updates enabled before Service Pack 2 will be downloaded.  Click here for instructions on how to enable Automatic Updates.

Step 1:  Once Service Pack 2 has automatically downloaded, you will be notified that it is ready to install as shown below.  Click on the information bubble to begin the installation of Service Pack 2.

Note:  Service Pack 2 will download automatically.  However, due to the heavy load that will be placed on Microsoft's servers, it may not immediately be available and it may be several days from the release date (currently August 16th, 2004) before it downloads.

Step 2:
Now the Automatic Updates window will appear.  Click on the Install button to continue.

Step 3:
You will now be shown which updates are available to install.  Service Pack 2 should be the only update in this list if all of the updates are already installed.  Click the Install button to continue to the next step.

Step 4:
You will now see an installation progress window.  This window will keep track of how far along the installation is.

Step 5:  The Service Pack 2 installation will now begin.  You will now see an Extracting Files window.  All of the data needed to install Service Pack 2 will now be extracted to your hard drive.

Step 6:
You will now be shown the Windows XP Service Pack 2 Setup Wizard.  Click the Next > button to continue.

Step 7:
You will now be taken to the License Agreement.  After reading the agreement, click on the radio button next to I Agree and click the Next > button.

Step 8:
The Windows XP Service Pack 2 Setup Wizard will now update your system.

Step 9:
Once installation is complete, you will be prompted to restart the computer.  Click OK to restart.  Once the computer has restarted, the installation will complete and Service Pack 2 will be completely installed.

Once Service Pack 2 Has Been Installed:

If you are using the campus Symantec Antivirus Client, after Pack 2 has been installed, you will see a warning that XP is unable to detect the status of your antivirus software.

To indicate that you have Symantec Antivirus installed, follow these instructions:

Step 1:  Click on Start->Run, type in Control and hit enter.

Step 2:  Double-click on the Security Center icon.

Step 3:  In the Virus Protection section, click on the Recommendations button.

Step 4:  In the Recommendations window, check the box next to "I have an antivirus program that I'll monitor myself." and click OK.

Step 5:  You will now be returned to the Security Center which should now look like the image below.  You can now close the Security Center.
