Setup a VPN Connection

Please print out these instructions and follow the steps on your computer.

STEP 1: Verify that your TTU Windows Domain Account is Active:

  1. Go to http://www.eRaider.ttu.edu and log in using your eRaider username and password.
     
  2. Click on the Manager your eRaider Account link.
     
  3. Under the eRaider Account Manager banner, there will be a section on the right titled Windows Domain Account. In this section, verify that you have an entry named TTU.EDU - Active that has a small bright green circle next to it. If you do, your Windows Domain Account is active and you can proceed to the next section.
     
  4. If you see a small dark green circle and an entry named TTU.EDU - Inactive instead, you will need to activate your domain account before continuing. To do this, click on the entry named TTU.EDU - Inactive. This will bring up a new screen that should allow you to activate your domain account. Follow the instructions presented on the screen to activate your domain account.
     
  5. Once you have followed the instructions on the screen, click on the General Information button on the left and verify that your account is now showing up as TTU.EDU - Active with a small bright green circle next to it in the Windows Domain Account section on the right side of the page.
     

STEP 2: Install and configure your VPN client:

NOTE:

  • Please DO NOT make any other changes to your configuration than those specified in these instructions.
  • It is VERY important that users install current service packs and critical updates prior to configuring your VPN connection (Microsoft Windows Update).
     

STEP 1: Click Start -> Network.

STEP 2: Click "Network and Sharing Center" button at the top of the window.

STEP 3: Click Set up a connection or network.

STEP 4: Click Connect to a workplace.

STEP 5: Click Use my Internet connection (VPN).

 

STEP 6: Enter the following:

  1. Internet address: vpn.ttu.edu
  2. Destination name: TTUnet VPN
  3. Only check "Don't connect now; just set it up so I can connect later. (More configuration is needed)

STEP 7: Enter the following:

  1. User name:  Your eRaider Username
  2. Password: Your eRaider Password
  3. Check Remember this password
  4. Domain: TTU
  5. Click Create

STEP 8: Click Properties.

STEP 9: Click on the Security tab. Select the following:

  • Typical settings
  • Require secured password
  • Require data encryption.

STEP 10: Click on the Networking tab.

Set the Type of VPN server to Point to Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP).

Note: If you are using a Cable Modem, DSL, or using any other non-Texas Tech service provider for your commercial Internet service, continue with these steps; otherwise, go to Step 13.

Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and then click on the Properties button.

STEP 11: Verify Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically are checked.

Click the Advanced button.

STEP 12: Uncheck Use default gateway on remote network. Click the OK button.

Note: If you are setting up a VPN connection to use the TTU online Library resources, you will need to check the Use default gateway on remote network checkbox.

STEP 13: Click the OK button on all preceding boxes.

STEP 14: Click Connect.
