About Dr. Carlson:
Paul H. Carlson has published fourteen books and more than 180 articles, essays, and book reviews. His most recent book is Amarillo: The Story of a Western Town (Texas Tech, 2006). Another book, The Plains Indians (1998), was a History Book Club selection and was published in a French language translation (Paris, 2004). In 2005, it was named one of the 100 most outstanding books on the American West published in the 20th century. In 2000, he received from the College of Arts and Sciences its Outstanding Researcher Award. He is a Fellow of the Texas State Historical Association, and he has served on advisory committees for the Handbook of Texas, the Texas Department of Parks and Wildlife, the Charles Goodnight papers, and several historical associations. In 1993, Carlson received the President’s Excellence in Teaching Award at Texas Tech, and he is a charter member of the University’s Teaching Academy. In 2005, he received the Professing Excellence Award (for outstanding teaching) from Residence Life students, and twice in recent years students have named him the history department’s Outstanding Faculty member. He is director of the Texas Tech Center for the Southwest.
