Student Senate Announces Faculty Recognition Program

The Texas Tech University Student Senate recently announced the creation of a program to recognize outstanding faculty from each college on campus. Faculty selected for recognition should exemplify academic excellence and a strong commitment to students. The profession is to be selected each March and recognized at the spring Student Senate banquet.

Students in the Honors College are asked to nominate their favorite Honors faculty member to represent the college. Nominations may be sent to Jennifer Stout (jennifer.stout@ttu.edu) or Jessica Hurdt (jessica.hurdt@ttu.edu), Honors College student senators, who will make the final selection based on the student nominations received. Nominations should be accompanied by a brief statement which explains why your nominee deserves to be recognized as an outstanding faculty member.  The deadline to receive nominations is Wednesday, March 21, 2007.

Undergraduate Research Fellowship Positions

The application for the 2007-2008 Undergraduate Research Fellowship (URF) Program is now posted on the Honors College’s URF website.  More information about the URF program, and the application, are available on the following webpage: http://www.depts.ttu.edu/honors/urf/info.html

To apply for a URF position, you and your prospective faculty mentor jointly complete the application.  The link below will take you to a database of professors interested in an undergraduate research fellow for the 2007-08 school year.  There are a handful of professors posted there now; and more will add their information over the coming weeks, so check back!  If you find a particular professor’s research interesting, contact that professor using the contact information he/she has provided on the database.

http://www.depts.ttu.edu/honors/urf/mentor_info_results.htm

If you would like to post your contact information, you can do so at this webpage:

http://www.depts.ttu.edu/honors/urf/student_info_form.htm

Professors who contact me with interest in finding a research fellow will be given access to this database of information.

URF positions are competitive, and not all applicants will receive a position.  Students from any department can apply for a position, and the research need not be in the area of your major(s).  The deadline for applications is 5 p.m. on April 16th, 2007.  Submit competed applications to Room 103 of McClellan Hall.  For questions, contact Joel Walker, URF Coordinator, at 742-1828 or joel.r.walker@ttu.edu.

Current Events Discussion, Friday, March 9, 2007, Noon, Honors Forum

Friday’s discussion will be entitled Rehab Britney!  Professor Kurt Caswell from the Honors College will be our facilitator.  See the commentary and links below, provided by Professor Caswell, to stimulate your thinking about the topic prior to Friday.  We’ll meet in the Student Forum of McClellan Hall from 12-1 p.m.  We’ll have sandwiches, chips, drinks, and cookies for you.  Joel Walker

“I find the Rehab Britney Doll (see link below) both hilarious and disturbing. What kind of culture are we that create people like Britney Spears?  Spears is in-part responsible for her own identity and life-path, but America provides a place, a possibility for the illusion of self as no other nation can.  Britney Spears is not a human being. We created her.  So then, what is she?  Similarly, we might ask: why Anna Nicole? What is the problem with Michael Jackson? Why do such creations—not people—break-down? Are we, all Americans, responsible for Britney’s madness?”                                                                                                             Professor Kurt Caswell
