Celebrating Black History: Education
The photograph of little Ruby Bridges, surrounded by U.S. Marshals, exiting her school is etched in the minds of every American who knows the history of segregation, discrimination, and Civil Rights. African Americans have been front and center not only in the battle to secure the educational rights for all our children, but also in the very making of the history and the curriculum itself. As teachers, educators, and administrators, African Americans have changed the face of education in the United States by protecting access and opportunity, insisting on the inclusion of all histories, and guaranteeing the rights to education for all youth.
