
Dr. Bell is from Pasadena, California. He attended Brigham Young University where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology in 1966. He went on to earn both a Master of Arts (1968) and a Doctorate (1974) degree in history from the University of California, Los Angeles. Dr. Bell came to Texas Tech University in 1993 from Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas where he was the director of their Honors Program. When Dr. Bell arrived, the Texas Tech University Honors Program consisted of only 4 students. The Program has grown into a College of approximately 1,000 students during his tenure first as the Director and now as the Dean. Dr. Bell has served as an officer in both the National Collegiate Honors Council and the Great Plains Honors Council and is recognized for the tremendous success of the Texas Tech University Honors College.
Dr. Bell serves not only as the Dean of the Honors College, but also as a faculty member. He teaches American History regularly, but also teaches seminars such as Science and Society and The World of Islam. He and his wife Marilyn enjoy gourmet cooking, and Dr. Bell has roasted a wild boar for the luau that the student organization Eta Omicron Nu (HON) holds each spring. Dr. Bell enjoys spending time with students when he can and strongly encourages them to actively participate in Honors and make it their own.
