Scholarships for Graduate Study
Madison
A domestic graduate study scholarship directed toward teaching
American History, American government, or Social Studies full time in
grades 7-12.
Who should apply?
- College Senior or
- Bachelor's degree by August 31st of application year
- Current Teacher
- Intended for Master's degree students (in priority)
- MA in American history or political science
- MAT concentrating in American constitutional history,
American government, or political theory
- MAE, ME, or MS in Education with concentration in American
History, American Government, or political institutions of
theory
- Those with a commitment to a career in teaching American
history, government, or social studies emphasizing the American
constitution in secondary education
- Those with a strong devotion to civic responsibility
- Academic achievement
When should you apply?
- Deadline: March 1, 2007
- Must be a college Senior (to apply for Junior Fellowships) for
2 years, degree completion
- Currently teaching (Sr. Fellowships) complete degree in 5
years of part-time study
- TTU recommendation not required
Award Details
- $24,000 maximum prorated over study period; maximum of $12,000
per year
- Awards made for cost of program (so most awards are for less)
- Teaching obligation for each year of full graduate year,
preferably in the state of award (or forfeiture of funds and
required refund to Madison scholarship)
- 4 week Summer Institute attendance expectation

- 12 Junior Fellowships and 42 Senior Fellowships awarded for 2004
- Usually only one award per state of legal residence
Application Checklist
- 600 word essay on the study of the US Constitution
- 2 letters recommendation (up to 3, but no more)
- Application forms (original and one copy)
- Transcripts of all undergraduate coursework (original and one copy)
