Who should apply?

  • Sophomores and juniors interested in pursuing research in math, the natural sciences, or engineering

  • GPA 3.0 or better plus upper 25% of class - however, a higher GPA has become an informal requirement to succeed

  • TTU Selection Committee requires, in order to be competitive, the following GPAs
    * Sophomore applicants: Cumulative GPA above 3.4,  Major GPA above 3.6
    *
    Junior applicants: Cumulative GPA above 3.5, Major GPA above 3.7
    Applicants below those averages may appeal to the campus Committee with special circumstances PRIOR to the campus deadline

  • Committee is looking for outstanding potential

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or resident alien intending to obtain U.S. citizenship

  • TTU can nominate UP TO 4 students per award year

When should you apply?

  • Sophomore and Junior Campus deadline December 1, 2006
  • Goldwater institutional deadline February 2007

Award Details

  • Awards are for one year for senior year, or up to two years for junior and senior year
  • Up to a maximum of $7,500 per year, including tuition, fees, books, room & board
  • Over the past 16 years, there have been 4,272 scholarships awarded worth a total of $42 million

Number of Awards

  • ≈1200 applicants a year, with ≈ 300 awarded per year, but the number of awards depends on the competitive nature of the applicant pool
  • Many Goldwater scholars go on to win Rhodes, Marshall, and admittance to prestigious graduate programs

Application Checklist

  • Nominee Information Form: biographical information, statement of intent
  • Nominee essay (600 words) relating to chosen career
  • 3 Independent Evaluations of Nominee (3 letters of recommendation from faculty members)
  • Official transcript of all college grades
  • Official high school transcript of all grades
