New application process in effect for Fall 2007!

New Students may select the room they want to live in for the 2007-2008 academic terms starting November 14, 2006.  In order to complete the housing application and select a room, students must first be admitted to Texas Tech University and establish their eRaider accounts.  Once these preliminary steps are completed, go to the housing website and select “Housing On Campus” and “Apply/Update-New Students Only”.  Students may return to the site anytime after the initial application to make changes as desired until the room selection process closes.  Please note that space may not be available in the hall of choice due to earlier applicants who selected space first.  Should the space you desire not be available it is recommended that you return to this site to check for vacancies that may occur throughout the room selection process due to cancellation or room changes made by other applicants.

Housing & Residence Life management is excited about the opportunity new students have to confirm room assignments now!

Recording Industry Prepares to Identify and Prosecute Copyright Violators!

The Recording Industry Association of America announced on Wednesday, June 25, 2003 that it will begin utilizing software to scan public directories for users of peer-to-peer networks in order to compile evidence against individuals who offer copyrighted music over networks. The software finds the Internet addresses of those who offer to freely distribute music files. They plan to sue individuals, including college students, for damages beginning as early as August 2003.

What is an illegal file share?

Illegal file-sharing can come in many forms, and includes all activities that allow access to copyrighted materials, such as music, movies, software, etc. Placing copyrighted materials in a shared network folder can also be a violation of copyright laws, even if the folder owner has legally purchased a licensed copy of the materials, and has the legal right to make an archive copy of the data. It is the license holder’s responsibility to ensure that other users can not gain access to the data. Simply distributing copyrighted materials to unauthorized users can be illegal, even if no payment is made.

What is peer-to-peer network?

The term “peer-to-peer network” refers to any network made up of peer nodes that function as both clients and servers to the other nodes on the network. Popular peer-to-peer networking software includes KaZaA, Morpheus, iMesh, and others where users install software to allow other users to access their computer resources.

How can I ensure that I am in compliance?

Texas Tech network users (including TTUnet dialup and Residence Hall LAN users) are required to comply with all copyright laws relating to their computers. Illegal file sharing of copyrighted materials over Texas Tech Networks is strictly prohibited. Violators may face civil and criminal prosecution. If you are in doubt as to whether you are in violation of copyright laws, you are strongly encouraged to disable all peer-to-peer software and/or shared network folders. More information on copyright may be found at http://www.itts.ttu.edu/documentation/laws/.

Visitation Policy

Visitation policies in the residence halls may be amended at the beginning of each academic year through the following process:

Each residence hall may now choose from one of the following four visitation options:

  1. Sunday through Thursday 11:00 a.m.to 12:00 a.m.
  2. Friday and Saturday 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 a.m.
  3. Sunday through Saturday 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 a.m.
  4. Sunday through Thursday 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 a.m.
  5. Friday and Saturday 24-hours
  6. Sunday through Saturday 24-hours

The residents of each residence hall may vote on these options at the beginning of each academic year and each resident receives one vote. A two-thirds vote of all residents on each residence hall’s official roster for one of the options is necessary to implement a change in the visitation policy for that hall. If a residence hall fails to reach a two-thirds vote of all the residents on each residence hall’s official roster on any one option, the hall may hold a second referendum to vote again. However, if following the second refrendum any one option fails to receive a two-thirds vote, the default visitation hours shall be the visitation hours currently in effect for that residence hall. Following one semester with default visitation hours, the residence hall may once again vote on the four options for the remainder of the academic year. Those residence halls that did approve an option with a two-thirds vote at the beginning of the academic year may only change this option at the beginning of each academic year.

The director of the Department of Housing and Residence Life shall have the discretion to modify and/or withdraw visitation hours should it be determined that members of a residence hall have not maintained community standards related to the visitation policy and behavioral expectations of the university described in the code of student conduct. This decision may be appealed by the effected hall government to the office of the Vice President for Student Affairs.

Residence Life Cinema

The Department of Housing and Dining Services is proud to introduce one of its newest services - Residence Life Cinema Channel 14. Residence Life Cinema is a 12-movie-a-month selection from the Swank Corporation. These movies are selected not only for entertainment value, but also for an educational opportunity of which most residents are not aware. Channel 14 is not just the channel that airs Residence Life Cinema. Channel 14 is also home to several important bulletin boards. These bulletin boards will provide students with important, up-to-date information about Housing and Residence Life and Hospitality Services, campus activities, hall events and even floor events. The bulletin boards will provide a new venue of advertisements for programs and will serve as a fast way to get information to students. For more information, call (806)742-2661 ext 284.
