Sterling Scott Trevey was hired as a Foreman in the Museum and given one primary goal – to restore over 300 acres of native prairie into the lush, diverse ecosystem that it had been in the 19th Century. The result of his years of work are evident. The prairie has now been transformed and has become an area of lush fields of native grass and thousands of wildflowers that support a diverse ecosystem teeming with wildlife. The restored prairie has become a resource for scholarship and informal learning that enhances the academic mission of the University. In the past year, over 700 university students and over 3,900 K-12 students visited the facility to learn about the natural world. The facility has also been featured in articles by Texas Tech Today, the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal, and numerous blogs by travel writers on the World Wide Web, as well as highlighted in the Native American Seed Company catalog due to Scott's tireless efforts.
