Chancellor Hance received a letter from Kay Enoch, who attended her son's Texas Tech Spring 2013 graduation commencement ceremony. Also in attendance was their 92 year-old grandmother who was in a wheelchair. When the wheelchair was unloaded, they realized it had two flat tires. According to Kay, "an incredibly nice man outside the arena (in a yellow day-glow vest) came over and asked if he could help", and he immediately called someone to put air in the tires. Since the grandmother could walk, they proceeded into the arena, leaving the wheelchair with the nice man who volunteered his assistance. While the ceremony was taking place, these two employees did more than just air up the tires. They realized that one tire had a hole and needed further repair. Without hesitation, they went to WalMart and purchased a new wheelchair tire. All repairs were completed, and the wheelchair was in working order by the end of the graduation ceremony. Mr. Garza's and Mr. Perez' actions during the Spring 2013 graduation commencement ceremony were the epitome of what this award represents.
