The Mission of the Family and Consumer Sciences Education program is to prepare individuals for professional positions in secondary schools, colleges and universities, extension education, and related areas through quality teaching, research, and service.

Admission to a post-baccalaureate teacher certification program requires a baccalaureate degree in one of the human sciences specializations with an overall 2.5 GPA and a satisfactory level of performance on the TASP test or equivalent.
The M.S. degree program is designed to prepare students for advancement in Family and Consumer Sciences Education careers.
The Ph.D. degree program is designed to prepare individuals for faculty positions in higher education and other professional leadership roles.

Career Opportunities
The job market is excellent for qualified Family and Consumer Sciences teachers in Texas. The state has a critical shortage of teachers in many fields, including FCS. The demand for new teachers will continue to increase as more than half of the state's currently employed FCS teachers become eligible to retire by the year 2010. During the next five years, Texas will need approximately 80,000 new teachers in all fields.
Texas teachers earn competitive salaries and have great benefits, including a 10-month contract, a family-friendly work schedule, insurance and retirement plans, options for summer employment, and in some districts, signing bonuses and relocation expenses.
In addition to classroom teaching, a Family and Consumer Sciences teaching certificate opens doors to careers in extension education, educational support services such as curriculum development and media, business training and development, human service agencies, and a variety of other fields.
M.S. and Ph.D. graduates are employed in schools, colleges and universities, extension education, state departments of education, educational support services such as curriculum development and media, and other professional positions.
