Dr. Blum is originally from New Jersey and received his undergraduate degree from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst; his MBA from San Diego State University; and Ph.D. from The University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

Dr. Blum served as the Assistant Chairperson for the Department of Nutrition, Hospitality and Retailing from 2001 to 2008 and began serving as the Chairperson in 2009. The department was reorganized and became Hospitality and Retail Management in 2014 and he continued to serve in that role until 2017. Dr. Blum has also served as the Interim Associate Dean of Operations for the College of Human Sciences, and has been the Secretary, Vice-President, and President of the Texas Tech Faculty Senate.

He and his wife Tracey own and operate two restaurants in Lubbock. When he is not working, Dr. Blum enjoys playing golf and traveling.

Courses Currently Teaching:

Dr. Blum currently teaches Human Resource Management in the Hospitality Industry.  He frequently also teaches Hotel Operations and Advanced Lodging Management.  He is currently creating a new undergraduate course titled Leadership and Customer Relations Management and a new version of the graduate level Organizational Behavior course. 

Research Interests:

Dr. Blum's research interests are primarily in the organizational behavior field.  Specifically, he conducts research on leadership, corporate culture, and employee motivation and job satisfaction.  He is also interested in emotional intelligence and cultural intelligence of both employees and managers.

Service Interests:

Dr. Blum has served in a variety of service roles at Texas Tech university during his tenure.  Just to name a few, he has been the Secretary, Vice President, and President of the Faculty Senate and has served as the President of the Teaching Academy Executive Council.  He has also served as the chair of the Commencement Committee and has served on search committees for the Texas Tech  President, Vice President for Research, and Dean of the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources.  He currently serves as the Co-Director of the Teacher Mentoring through Peer Observation (TeMPO) program through the Teaching, Learning, and Professional Development Center.

Areas of Expertise:

Dr. Blum worked in the hotel industry in a variety of positions for several years and has owned two restaurants for over a decade.  He is knowledgeable in the areas of hotel operations management, restaurant operations, and human resource management.
