For TTU faculty members who demonstrate teaching excellence, as evidenced by their attainment of distinction, both within and beyond the institution, for outstanding teaching and outstanding contributions related to excellence in teaching.

Nominees must be current faculty members at Texas Tech and have been a member of the faculty for a minimum of three years. An individual may receive this award only once.


Nominated by the deans of the colleges in which the nominees hold a faculty appointment.


Selection by the Executive Council of the Teaching Academy and the president of the Faculty Senate. Recommendation to the senior vice provost.
College nominee selected by the CoHS Faculty Council.


2. To the Vice President for Research by

Chancellor's Council Distinguished Research Award (1)

Designed to recognize members of Texas Tech University faculty who have achieved national or international recognition for publications in top journals, creative work presented nationally, service on editorial boards, peer-reviewed externally funded research projects, patents, patent applications, and license agreements, and other measures appropriate to the individual's discipline.

Eligibility is limited to faculty members who, at the time nominations are due to the VPR, have been in tenured or tenure-track positions at Texas Tech University for no more than eight years as of the beginning of the current fall semester and who have held the terminal degree for no more than twelve years (again, effective at the beginning of the current fall semester). Full professors are not eligible. An individual may receive this award only once.


Nominations shall originate with the deans of the colleges in which nominees hold a faculty appointment.


Selection by an appropriate university committee. Recommendation to the chancellor.
College nominee selected by the CoHS Faculty Council.

Teaching Academy Departmental Excellence in Teaching Award

Department or comparable academic unit demonstrates existence of a “teaching culture,” which reflects commitment to students, makes teaching a high departmental priority, and facilitates teaching excellence throughout the department.


Department submits application for consideration.
Multiple nominations from the College are encouraged.


Selection Committee composed of one Teaching Academy member from each college (two from Arts & Sciences) and two alternates. The provost/senior vice president for academic affairs, in consultation with the Executive Council of the Teaching Academy, will appoint the Selection Committee and alternates.


12. To the Vice President for Institutional Diversity and Community Engagement

President's Excellence in Diversity and Equity Staff Award


The President's Excellence in Diversity and Equity Award has been created through the Office of the President and administered by the Division of Institutional Diversity, Equity, and Community Engagement to recognize annually the efforts of staff to engage in activities that promote the value of diversity and the importance of equity in the university.
The President's Excellence in Diversity and Equity Faculty Award recognizes staff who have demonstrated leadership in:

  • Supporting academic activities and projects that contribute to a better understanding of diversity and equity issues.
  • Supporting students and/or student groups in programs and activities that promote tolerance and an appreciation of diverse cultures/groups.
  • Participating in off campus activities that foster a greater understanding of diversity.
  • Contributing to on and off campus activities that promote and celebrate diverse cultures/groups.

The recipient of the President's Excellence in Diversity and Equity Staff Award will receive a $1,500 stipend in September 2009.


Texas Tech faculty, staff, and student applicants must submit an application and letter of recommendation from a Texas Tech faculty, staff, or student. Applications and letter(s) of support must not exceed ten pages.
Nomination letters must include a clear description of the applicant’s contribution to promote diversity and equity.
A faculty, staff, or student member who can clearly describe your contributions in the area of diversity and equity.


Applications will be reviewed by a committee of Texas Tech peers.

Awarded to a faculty member who consistently demonstrates a positive and helpful attitude toward faculty and students and gives more of personal energies than are required by the job description. Awards will be recognized with a $1000 stipend. Two awards will be given.

Kathryn Burleson Staff Service Award
(2 awards per year)


Awarded to a staff member who consistently demonstrates a positive and helpful attitude toward faculty and students and gives more of personal energies than are required by the job description. Awards will be recognized with a $1000 award for each area. Two awards will be given - one for departmental, institute or centers staff; and another for staff that fall under the Dean’s office umbrella, including the dean’s office, advising, career /recruitment, Technology Services and development.
