Student Spotlight:Yujiao Zu

Student Spotlight: Yujiao Zu is a Ph.D. candidate in the Nutrition and Nanomedicine Laboratory in the TTU NS Department. She received her B.S. in Engineering of Microbiology and M.S. in Food Science form Tianjin University of Science and Technology in China. Yujiao came to TTU to work with Dr. Shu Wang to gain experience in investigating physiological mechanisms and nanoparticle treatments for obesity and its related metabolic disorders. Her research focus is to develop nanocarriers that target adipose stromal stem cells (ASC), in order to deliver resveratrol to adipose tissues and therefore enhance the anti-obesity effects of resveratrol.

Yujiao has made impressive achievements since she joined TTU. She has been awarded TTU Incentive for GRAD Scholarship, TTU Nutritional Sciences Gen Human Sciences Scholarship and Margaret Chan Carter Scholarship. Yujiao was also selected as a finalist in the American Society for Nutrition's Emerging Leader Poster Competition at Experimental Biology 2015; presented abstracts (one oral presentation and several posters); has published two review papers; served as a student reviewer of North America Chinese Society for Nutrition (NACSN) travel award program review committee in 2016.

Dr. Shu Wang said Yujiao is the most hard-working students she has ever seen. "She is eager for learning new things and is not afraid of taking the challenges for setting up new methods. A number of techniques required for her research were new to both her and the lab. Yujiao demonstrated a strong confidence and persistent effort and tackled the problem one by one, which was much beyond my expectation. Yujiao is passionate towards others and prepared to help, even going out of her way. She trains other students and has involved in other projects in my laboratory. While she is working on research projects, she volunteers in educational outreach activities in the local community, such as science demonstration at Lubbock Science Spectrum in 2015."

Yujiao is working on finishing her dissertation, and she hopes to graduate in Summer 2018. She plans to apply for a post-doctoral fellowship/ position in the US and her ultimate goal is to become a faculty member in a University researching applications of nanoparticles in nutrition-related diseases.
