Sharmin Akter joined the BMTR lab in the fall of 2016 as a master's student and has continued as a Ph.D. student from fall 2018. Before attending TTU, Sharmin completed her B.Sc. (hons.) and M.S. in Food Technology and Nutritional Science from Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology University, Bangladesh. During her undergraduate and graduate research, she worked in the areas of food processing, preservation and storage with an emphasis on studies to determine the nutritional values of the processed foods. She has experience working in various community nutrition services in her home county of Bangladesh. In the BMTR lab, her research focuses on the association of psychological, eating behavior, and weight history related variables with body weight and body fat loss. Along with this, Sharmin is working as a student provider in delivering clinical services at Nutrition & Metabolic Health Initiative (NMHI). Sharmin plans to work as a researcher on the association of eating behavior and weight loss upon completing her Ph.D.

Afrina Hossain Rimu is a master's student in the Department of Nutritional Sciences who joined the Behavioral Medicine and Translational Research (BMTR) Laboratory in the fall 2019. She received her Bachelor in Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) degree in 2014 from Sir Salimullah Medical College under the University of Dhaka in Bangladesh and also completed her year-long internship there. After graduation, she worked for the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research Bangladesh (icddr,b) as a project research physician. Working there, she gained experience working in the in-hospital setting seeing patients and collaborating with them for recruitment into studies which focused on public health. She also has experience in serving low-income populations, looking after their healthcare needs and nutritional status. In the BMTR lab, she is involved in research which analyses neurological ingestive behaviors and assess cognitive parameters after various nutritional interventions. Her research interest is to investigate the effects of lifestyle modifications (nutritional interventions, intermittent fasting, mindful meditations etc.) on the ingestive behaviors of people.

Tanisha Basu is pursuing her BS in Nutrition, Health and Wellness from Texas Tech University. She is from Kolkata, India. She has a penchant for giving back to the community and aspires to use nutritional research and community nutrition to help mitigate the problems of the global nutrition crises. Her volunteer experiences with the LIONS Club of Kolkata and the Missionaries of Charity have propelled her desire to serve the less fortunate. She wishes to further her education and pursue a Ph.D. in Nutrition with a focus on behavioral influences on food choices and how those can be used in preventing chronic diseases.

 

Shao-Yang

小羊 (Pronounced Shao-Yang)

Honorary Lab Member

小羊 joined the Behavioral Medicine & Translational Research (BMTR) Lab in June 2014 and attended the annual ObesityWeek conferences in 2014 & 2015. Her responsibility in the BMTR Lab is to keep lab members company and recruit more stuffed animals for the lab. 小羊 intends to pursue honorary postdoctoral status in the future.
