New graduate scholarships in COHS

A new $5,000 scholarship opportunity is now available for students interested in doctoral education at Texas Tech’s College of Human Sciences. Available in all academic departments beginning fall session 2010, the 10 Helen DeVitt Jones Graduate Student Scholarships are a one-year, one-time opportunity.

Aimed at recruiting new and outstanding doctoral students, the recipients will be chosen by taking into account all factors surrounding their academic scholarship and financial needs, as well as the student’s demonstrated record of community service and involvement. Students interested in graduate education in the College of Human Sciences should directly contact the academic department for more information.

Guidelines

Background

The College of Human Sciences is pleased to announce the Helen Devitt Jones Graduate Scholarships. Helen DeVitt Jones was a member of one of the great ranching families of West Texas. She graduated from the University of California at Berkley and later returned to Lubbock where she immediately began investing in Texas Tech University to fulfill her vision of bringing a better life to students of all ages, races, and needs.

Objective

The purpose of the Jones Scholarship is to develop future scholars in human sciences related disciplines. Doctoral students from all academic programs may benefit from the Foundation’s generous support. The current doctoral programs are Marriage and Family Therapy, Personal Financial Planning, Family and Consumer Sciences Education, Interior and Environmental Design, Human Development and Family Studies, Nutritional Sciences, and Hospitality Administration. This scholarship will be used to recruit high quality, outstanding new doctoral students into these programs.

Responsibilities of Jones Scholarship Recipients

Holders of the Jones Scholarship must be enrolled as full-time students and be in residence during the tenure of the scholarship. Recipients should be pursuing a doctoral degree in programs offered in the College of Human Sciences. In addition, students holding a Jones Scholarship will be expected to participate in volunteer projects benefiting the community, region, and/or human science related entities.

Value and Duration

The Jones Scholarship is $5,000 for one academic year. One-half of the scholarship will be disbursed during the Fall 2010 semester and the other one-half during the Spring 2011 semester. Out of state tuition will be waived for the entire academic year (fall, spring, summer). Holding a Jones Scholarship will not preclude the recipient from participating in research or teaching assistantships within the University or from being employed by the University or another organization on an hourly wage basis.

Application

Applicants for the Jones Scholarship should submit the following to the chairperson of the department in which they intend to pursue their studies.

Method of Award

Each doctoral program within the College will award one or more Jones Scholarships according to department policy. The merits of the scholarship applicant will be evaluated and placed on a list of all candidates ranked in order of relative merit. Starting at the top of this list and working down, the department will select the most qualified candidates.

Should any individual selected by this procedure to receive a Jones Scholarship decline the award, a replacement will be selected from the ranked list of candidates. Should an academic program be unable to secure a qualified recipient, the scholarship will be awarded to a qualified candidate from another academic area in the college. The allocation of area for the scholarship will be determined by the Executive Associate Dean.

A total of 10 awards will be made for the Fall 2010 semester.

Eligibility

Due to the diverse academic units and disciplines within the College, each program area will determine the eligibility of applicants for the Jones Scholarship. Eligibility will not be based on age, race, sex, citizenship, country of origin, or physical capabilities. Only prospective new students (domestic or international) applying for admission to the graduate program are eligible to apply. Students interested in applying for the Jones Scholarship should contact the Department Chair or Graduate Program Coordinator of the appropriate academic unit to obtain any needed information.

Selection of Candidates

Each academic unit will be eligible to award at least one Jones Scholarship. The specific method by which a candidate is selected is left up to the individual academic unit, with the understanding that a candidate should be of sound character and high academic quality. Candidates will be rated according to the unit’s evaluation criteria, and the scholarship(s) awarded to the most deserving candidate.

Prospective students may apply to their respective academic units until February 1, 2010. Candidates will then be ranked, and notification of award be submitted by March 1, 2010. Candidates will be expected to reply to the award notification in a timely manner to assure that all scholarships will be appropriately awarded.

Reporting

Each recipient of a Jones Scholarship will write a thank you letter to the Helen Jones Foundation (instructions will be provided) by September 15, 2010. Failure to submit the letter will result in the revocation of the scholarship. In addition, each recipient will write a brief (two page maximum) progress report. The report must be submitted by January 15, 2011 to the recipient’s department chairperson. The report should provide a brief description of his/her scholarly activities along with activities undertaken in meeting the responsibilities of Jones Scholars as described previously. This report must be submitted before the scholarship award can be made for the spring semester.
