S.M.I.L.E. Service Framework
Leadership and service go hand-in-hand. The expectation for youth to engage in community service is common among many youth programs. The United Future Leaders (UFL) program believes there is a gap between this expectation and the knowledge of why it is important for leaders to serve. Although students are equipped with giving hearts and able hands, their service experiences could be enhanced by applying a structured service plan that evaluates the effectiveness of work completed. In order to meet this need, UFL staff developed an original framework that provides students with a streamlined process for serving at home, school and in their communities. The goal of S.M.I.L.E. is to provide youth a framework that promotes understanding, organization and implementation of any service activity.
UFL Ambassadors receive an annual training that allows students to brainstorm individual, small-scale and large-scale service projects, utilizing the S.M.I.L.E. framework as an outline for the planning. Ambassadors are also encouraged to complete an Online Service Log, which includes a description of each step in the S.M.I.L.E. framework, for any act of service where they do not receive compensation.
