Invitation for Family Visit

ISSS does not issue letters for students who want to invite family or friends to visit. The Department of State does not consider these letters from ISSS in their decision regarding whether or not to issue visas for these friends or family members.

Please see the "Note" from the Department of State web page regarding visitor visa applications:

NOTE: Visa applicants must qualify on the basis of the applicant's residence and ties abroad, rather than assurances from U.S. family and friends. A letter of invitation or Affidavit of Support is not needed to apply for a non-immigrant tourist visa. If you do choose to bring a letter of invitation or Affidavit of Support to your interview, please remember that it is not one of the factors that we use in determining whether to issue or deny a non-immigrant tourist visa.

For information and instructions regarding family and friends that are eligible to enter the US without a visa under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP), please visit Department of State VWP website.

Students may chose to write letters confirming their relationship to these family members and to invite them (the family member may also chose to provide documents proving their relationship to you, such as a birth certificate). You can find a template for your letter: Sample Invitation Letter For Family to Visit. ISSS letters, however, are not helpful or required based on this DOS guidance.
