Cinco de Mayo Celebration for local schools

Students from Plains ISD and Shallowater ISD enjoyed a fiesta celebrating the traditions of Cinco de Mayo at the International Cultural Center. K12 GEO presented the history behind event, explaining the Battle of Puebla and local customs. Students also enjoyed learning about the significance of Ballet Folklorica, and listening to mariachi music by local performers. A special thank you to Mariachi Amistad and Carver Learning Center for providing the entertainment for our program.

Holocaust Lecture- Terra Vista Middle School

Ms. Kristina Janeway's 8th grade advanced English classes have been studying the Holocaust during spring semester. As part of their culminating activities for the unit, they attended a lecture at the ICC presented by Dr. Lynne Fallwell. Dr. Fallwell is a historian of Modern Germany with a particular interest in the Third Reich, the Holocaust, and Nazi Medicine. In addition to various shorter pieces, her book, Modern German Midwifery, 1885-1960, was published by Pickering & Chatto in 2013. She developed a personal interest in teaching and researching Comparative Genocide after working for a non-governmental agency in Sarajevo during the Bosnian Conflict. Dr. Fallwell is currently Director of National and International Scholarships & Fellowships and helps TTU undergraduates apply for competitive external awards like the Rhodes, Goldwater, and Truman Fellowships.
