Internet Explorer 8
vulnerability and recommended actions
Microsoft has announced an
unpatched, serious vulnerability in its Internet Explorer 8 web
browser. The TTU IT Division recommends that all faculty, staff, and
students who have Internet Explorer 8 installed take a series of actions
to protect their computer.

TTU Departmental
Web Page Changes
On Wednesday, February 20th, 2013, TOSM staff, in
coordination with the TTU Office of the CIO, made changes to improve the
www.depts.ttu.edu website
infrastructure to increase the robustness and scalability of this
critical platform. This upgrade will shorten our typical maintenance
windows for the departmental websites, as well as provide the ability
to scale www.depts.ttu.edu to
meet future needs. As part of this change, the content publication
process will change slightly for departmental websites.
- Residence
Hall Network Registration Begins January 12th
Beginning
Saturday, January 12, 2012, the TTU IT
Division will implement network (TTUnet) registration in the TTU
residence halls.
- TechMail Infrastructure
Upgrade
In compliance with industry standards and to provide a higher level of
security, reliability, and features, TTU will begin upgrading TTU mailboxes to
the newest version of Microsoft Exchange, Exchange 2010, on June 19, 2012.
- Residence

Beginning
Saturday, August 18, 2012, the TTU IT
Division will implement network (TTUnet) registration in the TTU
residence halls.
- Changes to Email Delivery
Email automatically flagged as a possible phishing attempt and has
a warning message inserted will no longer be automatically placed into your
Junk Mail folder.

Required Updates to Communicator for Mac
Microsoft has
recently replaced its Communicator 2011 software for Mac with Lync 2011. The
upgraded software is designed for TTU’s Lync Server 2010 and provides a
wider range of functionality with added features. Installing the
upgrade is a simple process and should take no more than a few minutes to
complete. You may download the Lync client for Mac through the eRaider
website at https://eraider.ttu.edu.

TTU Departmental
Web Page Changes
On Sunday, June 5th, 2011, TOSM staff, in
coordination with the TTU Office of the CIO, moved the departmental website
content to a new, more powerful server. The new hardware provides the campus
with more robust infrastructure for our departmental websites. As a
part of this upgrade, site authoring and access options will change
slightly, and TTU IT Help Central has prepared information to assist campus
web authors.

Microsoft Communicator
2007 Upgrade to Lync 2010
On Tuesday, April 5th,
2011, you will be required to install Lync 2010 as Communicator 2007
will no longer be supported. Telecommunications recently
upgraded the voice, video, IM and conferencing servers to Lync 2010
to provide enhanced Unified Communications to the University.

Recycle Your IT Equipment:
Raider PC Mart
In collaboration with Property Management, the IT Division created “Raider
PC Mart,” a voluntary online communication system to facilitate
the exchange of computing equipment among TTU departments.
Raider PC Mart allows departments to electronically find other
departments that may be interested in the outgoing equipment. We
invite you to use this service before the equipment is surplused
through Property Inventory.

Page Changes
Due to a recent hardware failure, the TTU Data
Center was required to upgrade our current server infrastructure sooner than
anticipated. The hardware will increase usability, reliability, robustness,
and security, and also entails changes for content owners and managers.
- Mac Office 2011 Now
Available to the TTU Community
The latest version of
Microsoft’s Office suite for Macintosh users, Mac Office 2011, is now
available to the TTU Community as a free eRaider download or for purchase in
the ATLC (West Basement of the Main Library Building).
- TTU Personal Web Page and TechDrive
Systems Changes
On the morning of Wednesday, January 5th,
2011, changes will be made to the Texas Tech University Personal Web Page
(www.webpages.ttu.edu) and TechDrive personal file share
(techdrive.tosm.ttu.edu) services; new web hosting and file share hardware
will increase usability, reliability, robustness, and security.
- Microsoft Office 2010 Available to the TTU Community
After extensive testing, the TTU IT Division is releasing Microsoft Office
2010 to the TTU Community. Beginning on December 13th,
Microsoft Office 2010 media is available at the ATLC (West Basement of the
Main Library Building).

- eRaider Account and
Services Website Enhancements
After extensive
design, development, and usability testing with the TTU Community,
the TTU IT Division is pleased to announce the release of an
enhanced eRaider Account Manager website (http://eraider.ttu.edu). The new eRAMS
interface will be updated the evening of Friday, August 20th. Between the hours
of 8:30 PM and 7:50 AM, the eRaider Account Management system will be
unavailable while the new system is put in place.
- TTU Time & Effort Reporting
TTU Time and Effort Reporting is an accounting of effort on sponsored agreements, both paid and unpaid. TTU faculty and staff who have utilized grants are required to certify work performed and verify that direct labor charges are reasonable and reflect actual work performed.
- IT Help
Central Walk-Up Services
IT Help Central has implemented a new
service for our customers known as "Walk-up Services." This
service replaced our previous "Drop-off Services" and allows
customers to learn safe computing practices first-hand in a
one-on-one environment.
- Banner (INB) Password Policy Change
As you may be aware, the Banner Enterprise Software upgrade from
version 7 to version 8 is scheduled for March 11-15, 2010. Part of
the upgrade process included a review of the current password policy
in Banner.
- Qakbot Virus
Advisory
A variant of a rapidly-spreading Trojan
virus is currently infecting systems across the country. This virus,
known as W32.Qakbot, infects computers through certain malicious or
compromised websites.

Banner Upgrade Successfully Completed a Day Early
The Banner enterprise software has been successfully
upgraded and is ready for your use a day early!
- Banner 8
Upgrade - March 11 - March 15 (Complete)
The Banner enterprise software will be upgraded from version 7 to
version 8 in March. This upgrade will provide functional and
technology enhancements but will require Banner and associated
applications to be UNAVAILABLE from Thursday, March 11, 2010 through
Monday, March 15,
2010. Normal services were resumed Monday morning, March 15, 2010. Raiderlink portal will be operational in a
limited capacity with links to sites that are available.
- Internet Explorer 8
Compatibility with TTU Systems (Banner, TechBuy, etc.)
Due to compatibility issues, TTU enterprise application vendors have
not yet certified the use of IE8. Therefore, if you use TTU
enterprise applications we advise you not to install the IE8 upgrade.
- Office
Communicator and Live Meeting Updates
Updates for Office Communicator, Live Meeting, and the Outlook Conferencing
Add-in became available, November 24th. These updates provide stability
improvements and are necessary to support future functionality. After
Friday, December 18th, these updates will be required in order to use
Office Communicator and Live Meeting.

Message Filtering in TechMail
The TTU IT Division has implemented two new email
features: Outbound Junk Email Filtering and Phishing Protection.
These measures are an attempt to help protect eRaider accounts from
phishing and to protect TechMail servers from being blocked by other
email providers.
