TTU Internet Dial-Up Service Retirement
In the last three years, the number of TTU Internet dial-up
subscribers has dramatically decreased by as much as 43% annually. The trend is
common among peer institutions and in private industry; many have already
discontinued dial-up service. Additionally, due to aging dial-up network
hardware and very expensive refresh costs, a major system upgrade would be
required to continue providing this service to the TTU community. With these
considerations, the cost per user becomes high enough that TTU dial-up customers
will be better served by high speed access from the private sector. Given the
declining monthly expense for high-speed services, we recommend that you
consider cable, DSL, or satellite connectivity.
Please Note: Texas Tech University dial-up services
were discontinued September 15, 2007.
As you review your options pending the discontinuation of this
service, please feel free to contact IT Help Central at 806-742-HELP for further
information. If you are changing from dial-up services to high-speed services,
you may be able to disconnect an additional dial-up dedicated telephone line
that you may have set up previously, and apply those savings towards high-speed
access.
