Repair Internet Explorer

IT Help Central - Repair Internet Explorer

Did you know that you can repair Internet Explorer?

Because Internet Explorer and the Windows operating system are related, problems in Internet Explorer will most likely lead to problems in Windows.  An available option is to repair Internet Explorer.  Yes, it is possible to repair Internet Explorer.  The trick is to use files downloaded for the initial upgrade.  Remember those files you downloaded when you upgraded your version of Internet Explorer?

When Internet Explorer is upgraded to a later version, the option is presented to save the Install files downloaded from Microsoft's servers.  Although you're given the choice of deleting the files, it's a good idea to keep them because they can be used to replace corrupted files.  Otherwise, the files will have to be downloaded again which can take some time.

After the upgrade process, you can see the newly-installed Internet Explorer listing.  Go to the Start Menu and select Control Panel.  From Control Panel, select Add/Remove Programs from the list of icons in Control Panel.  Microsoft Internet Explorer will be one of the programs listed.  However, if Internet Explorer is the same version that came with the operating system (in other words, it hasn't been upgraded), it won't be listed.

After opening the Add/Remove Programs control panel, Internet Explorer should be listed in the installed programs.

Click the Change/Remove button.  This will open a window that will allow repair of Internet Explorer.

In the above window, select Repair Internet Explorer and click OK.  This will start the process of checking system settings and files related to Internet Explorer.

A couple of notes:  Clicking the Advanced button will allow removal of the backup information for the earlier version of Internet Explorer.  However, if the backup information is deleted, there will be no earlier version of Internet Explore to recover and the current version of Internet Explorer will have no mechanism for removal.  In other words, you're stuck with it.

If the option is selected to Remove the folder containing the Windows Update setup files, then any file replacement by the Repair process will have to be done by downloading any necessary file from the Internet or another source if it was used.

After the Repair process is complete, you will be prompted to reboot the computer, so close any open documents and programs.
