Extracting the contents of a ZIP file

IT Help Central - Extract ZIP archive

To Illustrated Instructions

Step 1:  With WinZip installed, it is also possible to extract the contents of a ZIP archive file. To begin, start the WinZip application. In this case, we are using "Classic" mode. In the shareware version of the program, a screen then appears when the program is started.

Step 2:  In order to use the program, it is only necessary to click the I Agree button, and the application will start. In our case, it will start in "Classic" mode.

Step 3:  As noted before, this program can be used to browse the contents of a ZIP archive file and to extract the contents. However, we need to open a ZIP file first. We'll choose a file named 'FirstZip' (Note that in most Windows installations, the file extension is hidden from view.) Just click the Open icon and the 'Open Archive' window appears allowing the choice of ZIP file to open. Once the desired file is located, just select it and click the Open button.

The WinZip window now lists the files contained inside the ZIP file 'FirstZip.zip'. Note that each file has a plus (+) sign after it, denoting that the file is password protected.

Step 4:  To extract the file(s) contained in the ZIP file, click on the Extract icon in the WinZip application. We are given a choice of location to extract the ZIP file(s) to. In this instance, we will extract the files to the C:\temp location on the hard drive. Note that we have a choice to extract 'All files' or to list files to extract. For most occasions, it's okay to extract all files.

Remember that these files are password protected, so when we choose to extract the files, we need to know the password.
