Connect to a Departmental website in Adobe Dreamweaver CS 5.5
NOTE: If you are off the TTU campus or connected through a wired connection in the TTU residence halls, establish a TTUnet VPN connection before beginning these Steps.
Click anywhere on the desktop to activate Finder. From the Go menu, choose Connect to Server.
The Connect to Server prompt will appear. Type the path smb://depts.tosm.ttu.edu/sites/site_name, and then click Connect.
NOTE: In Leopard (10.5) only, you must use the format: smb://depts.tosm.ttu.edu:139/sites/site_name.
OPTIONAL: Click the plus (+) button to add the path to your Favorite Servers so you will not have to type the address in the future.
If you are prompted for credentials, choose Registered User, type your information as shown below, and then click Connect.
- Name: ttu\your_eRaider_username
- Password: your eRaider password
Close the Finder window that opens.
Open Dreamweaver. Click on the Site menu and choose Manage Sites.
Before adding a new entry for your departmental site, review the list of sites to see if you have existing entries listed for the site. If so, consider selecting them from the list and clicking Remove to avoid confusing them with the new entry you are about to add. (This will not delete or modify any of the actual files stored on the server.)
Click the New button.
Click the Site sub-section if it is not already selected. To manage your webpage you can use "local" (on your computer) or "live" (on the server) editing.
Live (on the server):
Type a name for your site in the Site Name box. This can be any descriptive name you wish.
In the Local Site Folder box, type /Volumes/site_name, where site_name is the name of your departmental website folder.
Click Save and skip to "Step 12" below.
NOTE: If you choose this option any changes you save will be immediately visible to anyone on the Internet at http://www.depts.ttu.edu/site_name. Any files you delete from here will be unrecoverable.
Local (on your computer):
Type a name for your site in the Site Name field. This can be any descriptive name you wish.
In the Local Site Folder box, you may either type the location of the locally-stored copy of your website, or simply use the folder icon to browse and select the website location.
Click on the Servers sub-section, and then click the plus (+) button.
Configure the following settings and click Save.
- Server Name: any descriptive name you wish
- Connect using: Local/Network
- Server Folder: /Volumes/your_site_name
- Web URL: http://www.depts.ttu.edu/your_site_name
NOTE: Replace your_site_name with the folder name of your site on the server.
Click Done on the Manage Sites window.
You will be able to edit your departmental website with Dreamweaver on your computer using "local" (on your computer) or "live" (on the server) editing. Any changes you publish will be visible to anyone on the Internet at http://www.depts.ttu.edu/your_site_name.
Files you delete from here are unrecoverable.
The name of the home page required is one of the following:
The Web server will look for the file names in the order listed above. The file name is case sensitive. If you rename your home page file to one of these file names, then the page should show up when you go to your website's URL at http://www.depts.ttu.edu/site_name. Be sure you have your home page in the root directory of your account and not in a sub-folder.
If you restart your computer or lose connection to the file share, you may need to follow Steps 1-4 again to re-authenticate before you will be able to connect to edit your website in Dreamweaver.
