Microsoft Office 2007
The TTU IT Division
announces the availability of Microsoft Office 2007 to the TTU campus community
starting on Wednesday, July 25, 2007.
With the release of Microsoft Office 2007, a new set of standard file formats
has been released for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Customers using earlier
versions of Microsoft Office (2003, XP) will not be able to open, edit, save, or
create files using the new file formats without the installation of a
compatibility pack provided by Microsoft. Additionally, Office 2007 users have
the option to save their files in formats supported by previous versions of
Microsoft Office. Additional information about the new file formats and the
Compatibility Pack are provided by Microsoft at
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/products/HA101686761033.aspx.
Microsoft Office 2007 may be downloaded at
http://eraider.ttu.edu or purchased for a nominal charge in the ATLC
(located in the west basement of the University Library building). Note that our
contract only authorizes distribution media for the Microsoft Office
Professional Plus suite. The Microsoft Office 2007 Enterprise suite that adds MS
One Note (digital organization application) and MS Groove (team collaboration
application) is available via secure download on the eRaider Web site.
Features:
Microsoft has introduced a new look to Office 2007 called the Ribbon. The Ribbon
is designed to help you quickly find the commands that you need to complete a
task.*
Commands are organized in logical groups, which are collected together under
tabs. Each tab relates to a type of activity, such as writing or laying out a
page. To reduce clutter, some tabs are shown only when needed. For example, the
Picture Tools tab is shown only when a picture is selected.*
For more information on how to use the Ribbon, please visit Microsoft's website

What new features/differences are available in Office 2007?
The main new feature in Office 2007 is the Office fluent user interface. Basically, the drop-down menus (such as File and Edit) have been replaced with ribbons spanning left-to-right. This layout makes it easier for users to see and locate functions within the application.
Only four main Office applications use this interface: Access 2007, excel 2007, PowerPoint 2007, and Word 2007. In addition, some areas of Outlook 2007 use this interface—for example, e-mail message authoring.
To learn more about the Office fluent user interface, please visit
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/suites/HA101679441033.aspx.
In addition, Office 2007 includes many features that businesses and individual users can use to complete tasks more quickly and easily. For example, Word 2007 boasts more than 1,500 commands for users.

I don’t want to upgrade right now. Is there a plug-in that will allow me to open Office 2007 documents using my Office 2003?
Yes, Microsoft has created a compatibility pack for Office 2007 Word, Excel, and PowerPoint file formats. If you are currently running Office 2003, Office XP, or other older versions of the Office suite, this compatibility pack will allow you to open, edit, and save documents, workbooks, and presentations in Office 2007.
For more information, and to download this compatibility pack, please visit

How do I save documents in Office 2007 in compatibility mode so individuals with Office 2003 or older suites can open it?
In Office 2007, you may save files in “compatibility mode” to allow other individuals running older Office suites to open, edit, and save your documents without the compatibility pack.
To save a document in compatibility format:
- Go to the Office Menu button (located in the upper-most left hand corner of the Office screen)
- Select “Save As”
- From the dialog box, choose “(Application you are in) 97-2003 Document” Save As Type drop-down menu.
Please be aware that when saving Office 2007 documents in compatibility mode, the application will lose the functionality that is only available in Office 2007 applications.
-
Where can I receive training on the new features and how to navigate Office 2007 applications?
TTU IT Division provides two free training options for faculty, staff, and students, depending on individual preference.
ShortCourses, our face-to-face classroom training option, are available throughout the year on a variety of topics, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Access, and more. These courses are generally two hours in length and are taught by professional IT staff members.
To locate the current course schedule, read course descriptions, and download course materials, please visit
http://www.depts.ttu.edu/itts/training/shortcourses/.
Computer-based training (CBT) is another training option. CBT can be accessed from any computer with an Internet connection at
http://cbt.ttu.edu. Courses range from basic to advanced technology skills, management skills, and certification tracks. Courses are available to download and work offline. Faculty can track student course progress, set class goals, and set student reminders. Each CBT course includes self-assessment materials so that individuals and professors can measure their own progress and content mastery.
To utilize the CBT system, visit the link listed above and enter your eRaider username and password. To browse the course catalog, click on "Course Catalog" near the top center of the homepage. You can also use the "Search-and-Learn" feature to search using keywords, titles, or course IDs. Once a professor assigns a course to a student, it will appear on their homepage under “My Plan.”
