Laboratory Emergency Procedures

Note: Anyone working in a lab handling animal or human blood must participate in the biological safety training programs at http://www.dept.ehs.ttu.edu/ehs/ehshome/training  

If you are accidently stuck with a needle that has been exposed to human blood:

Call Environmental Health and Safety to report the incident at 742-3876 (ask to speak to Jared Martin or Matt Roe). In addition, call Jacalyn McComb at 834-6306 or Joaquin Gonzales at 834-5944

If after hours call the TTU Police at 742-3931 or Emergency Maintenance at 742-3301

THIS IS AN EMERGENCY AND SHOULD BE TREATED SERIOUSLY

STUDENTS

  • Follow the procedures as outlined in the KSM Laboratory Safety Manual for accidental needle sticks.  This manual can be found in the Biochemistry Lab room 121 in the KSM Building
  • Go to the Student Wellness Center located at 1003 Flint Ave. on the TTU campus. The phone number is 743-2848. 
  • Take the TTU POST EXPOSURE PACKET with the form labeled Contaminated Sharps Injury Reporting Form with you. This packet can be found in the Biochemistry Lab, room 121, in the KSM Laboratory Safety Manual on the book shelves on the east wall when you enter the room.  
  • When completed send the forms to Environmental Health and Safety at MS 1090, 122 Administrative Support Center (806) 742-3876.

If the Student Wellness Center is closed (open 8 am to 6 pm) go to the nearest emergency room. The UMC Emergency Medical Center's number is 775-8636. It is located at 602 Indiana Avenue. You can also go to Covenant Emergency Center located on 6515 19th Street, their number is 725-4288.

FACULTY OR STAFF

  • Follow the procedures listed in the KSM Laboratory Safety Manual in laboratory 121 for accidental needle sticks 
  • Go to your PCP immediately or to the emergency room if after hours.
