How to name files

Subject: The times they are a ...

Lisa:

The start time could be when you fed the pig the first time or when they are all marked in the pen for the first time. We have been using the time that they are all marked but we could change the start time to the feed time if you have a reason.

Here's an example of what we have been doing. We are using a 15 minute scan, there are sixteen 15 min scans points in a four hour period. There are four 15 min scans points per hour.

We have developed a methodology that devised a 24 hr period up into 6 four hour periods. This allows for a uniform data set to be collected and for time of day effects to be explored.

Time period codes

0-4 = A
4-8 = B
8-12 = C
12-16 = D = 12 pm-4 pm
16-20 = E = 4 pm - 8 pm
20-24 = F = 8 pm - 12 am

Here's an example:

All pigs in pen- 8:32am
First scan sample- 8:45
Second scan sample- 9:00
S3- 9:15
S4- 9:30
S5- 9:45
S6- 10:00
S7- 10:15
S8- 10:30
S9- 10:45
S10- 11:00
S11- 11:15
S12- 11:30
S13- 11:45
END (This is time period C)

Then
S1- 12:00
S2- 12:15
.
.
.
S16- 15:45
END (This is time period D)

Then
S1- 16:00
S2- 16:15
.
.
.
S16- 19:45
END (This is time period E)

Then
Time period F

Then
Time period A

Then
Time period B

Then
S1- 8:00
S2- 8:15
S3- 8:30
Time period C2
END Day 1

Time periods C and C2 are combined later on to give a complete period.

Then we start the data collection for day 2
Time period C Day 2
S1- 8:45
S2- 9:00
S3- 9:15
S4- 9:30
S5- 9:45
S6- 10:00
S7- 10:15
S8- 10:30
S9- 10:45
S10- 11:00
S11- 11:15
S12- 11:30
S13- 11:45
END (This is time period C)

In this example you would have the following files for three days
Day 1
C
D
E
F
A
B
C2

Day 2
C
D
E
F
A
B
C2

Day 3
C
D
E
F
A
B
C2

Hopefully this doesn't confuse you too much. Once I have the information about when the pigs where in the pens then I will send you a sheet with file names and how many samples to take for a given time.

We don't need the time down to the sec, 12:33 would be fine. You will be able to record both pens of pigs at the same time, should only need to go over the tapes twice. The first time for the maintenance behavior, the second time for fighting.

We should be able to get you watching tapes sometime next week. It's good to watch 2-4 hours a day, you should be able to review 48-72 hr. worth of tape a day once you get going. Everyone is slow at first so don't let that bother you. Have a good weekend, Jeff

But we put the pigs in the pens, separated them into where they belonged, then almost immediately marked them, why isn't the start time after they get marked - we can't tell who is who until that point anyway. Let me know what you think.  Thanks, Lisa

I think I have successfully completed 4 hours of using the observer program. I viewed pens 38/40. A couple of specific questions, I catergorized standwalk whenever the animal was standing/walking even if it was near the waterer or feed bin, is this right? I guess I am using the strict definition that if the animal isn't actually drinking or have its head in the feed bin it is standwalk.

Also, to forward to the next sample, I would hold down FF and watch the counter on computer monitor and as it got closer use the advance button to advance very slowly, is this the way it is done?

How do I save my file to disk if I don't use Windows like the instructions say. I could always use my personal monitor when I want to save files, but shouldn't I always back them up every time I get done completing one? Another idea is to go in setup of monitor in Windows and choose a smaller resolution (maybe that would fix problem??). Thanks for your help.  Lisa

There are the file names for taping 2 and 3. Please check these as there was something discumblubututied in the sheet that you sent me. I think I figured it out and everything is OK now, but please check to make sure I got it right.

There are some problems with the taping 1 files. I have marked 12 of them which might be quickest to just redo. There are 12 more that you can fix with 'ease'. I attached a problem help sheet to help you. You might need to have your text editor and excel open at the same time while having the VCR on to do this, does Dr. Hank have a laptop you could borrow? Feel free to contact me about this as Adam didn't look at it and it is rather confusing at times.

I hope that you are having fun with your classes.  Jeff

Hey Jeff, sending you my correction to the file you sent, it wasn't actually dark at 12600. I had it written in my notebook. Is that what you wanted from me? I didn't quite understand your click to drag and fill in Step A or B. I just filled in the yellow boxes correctly. Is that how to do it?
