Animal well-being: Society is concerned about the health and well-being of animals used for food production and for basic agricultural research. Our goal is to reduce animal stress and improve comfort in productions systems. With measures of behavior, physiology, immunology, endocrinology and heath, technology will be developed to define and improve conditions of livestock.
Pre-harvest food safety: Safety of animal food products is of paramount importance to the consumer. Meat, in particular, has received criticism because of bacterial contamination. Management methods based on animal behavior that reduce pathogen contact and shedding in production environments, during transportation and prior to slaughter will be developed.
