History Division

Division mission:
To collect, preserve, document, and interpret the material culture of Lubbock and the South Plains, and its adjacent West Texas regions.

Division scope:
The History Division collects, maintains, and interprets objects relating to the heritage of local and regional environs.

The Division's collection focus includes the Museum's own institutional heritage and the Texas Tech University community, as well as Lubbock and the South Plains.  The collection also reflects interests in the political, social, and economic history of West Texas, and its social and ethnic groups.  Some of the strongest collections are in medical equipment, firearms, furniture, household items, tools and hardware, and toys and games.

Most historic objects fall within the scope of this collection, with a few exceptions:

  • Materials held by other divisions of the Museum include clothing and textiles, dolls and their costumes, and native ethnological items, all of which are housed in the Division of Ethnology and Textiles.
  • Archæological collections are located in the Division of Anthropology.
  • Ranching-specific materials are found at the National Ranching Heritage Center, next door to the Museum.
  • Historic manuscript collections are at the Southwest Collection, located on the Texas Tech campus.
  • Although the History Division has some agricultural equipment, the Lubbock Agricultural Museum, a new and separate institution, will soon be collecting and interpreting that material.

  • Henry B. Crawford is the Curator of History. He is a Ph.D. candidate with the History Department at Texas Tech University.
