The Museum of Texas Tech University is pleased to invite the public to a presentation titled “Collecting for the Home,” with well known appraiser Joan Caballero on Sunday afternoon, April 10, at 2pm, in the Helen DeVitt Jones Auditorium. Admission is free and ample free parking is available in the Museum’s north and west lots at 3301 4th Street.
As a 31 year resident of Santa Fe, NM, Joan Caballero spent most of her time working in the field of Native American Arts. For the last 13 years she has worked actively as a qualified appraiser of Native American Arts: antique and contemporary; New Mexico Hispanic Arts; Southwest Regional Fine Arts: Taos and Santa Fe Schools; general 20th century American antiquities and household items. Her services include providing professional, comprehensible appraisals and consultations for insurance, charitable donation, equitable distribution and estate purposes.
As an accredited member of the International Society of Appraisers, Caballero is recognized by the IRS and other appraisers, attorneys, museums, insurance companies, estates and collectors as a highly qualified appraiser.
During the 1980s Caballero was Director of Indian Arts at Dewey Galleries in Santa Fe, NM, one of the most prominent Native American art galleries in the country. Her specialized knowledge is self]taught and acquired first hand through many years of working with Native American artists, gallery owners, museums, auctions, collectors, dealers and by attending appraisal and conservation seminars.
Caballero’s interest in Native American art has extended into the non]profit sector as well in which she served six years as a member, two of those as president, of the Board of Directors for the Southwestern Association for Indian Arts, the organization that produces the renown annual Santa Fe Indian Market. She has also judged annual competitions including: The Santa Fe Indian Market, Santa Fe, NM; The Gallup Intertribal Ceremonials, Gallup, NM; The Navajo Nation Fair, Window Rock, AZ; the Eight Northern Pueblos Show, Northern NM; and the Museum of Northern Arizona Hopi Show, Flagstaff, AZ.
