FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
October 29, 2003
The Museum of Texas Tech University presents Defining Craft I: Collecting for the New Millennium, from November 2, 2003, through July 25, 2004. The large exhibition will be shown in several of the museum's changing galleries. The museum is located on the SE corner of Fourth Street and Indiana Avenue.
Organized and circulated by the Museum of Arts and Design in New York City, Defining Craft I: Collecting for the New Millennium is the first in a series of exhibitions that explore the changing definitions and meanings of craft today. Defining Craft I is comprised of 175 works by American and international artists whose works have shaped the history of craft over the past 25 years-artists at the forefront of creativity in glass, clay, metal, fiber and wood. Works by such well-known and creative craftspersons as Peter Voulkos, Jack Lenor Larsen, Viola Frey, Lenore Tawney, Arline Fisch, Robert Arneson, and Wendy Ramshaw will be shown alongside work by young and emerging talent. Works featured in the exhibition are drawn from the Museum of Arts and Design's permanent collection, with many new acquisitions, donations, and promised gifts exhibited for the first time.
The exhibition acknowledges the contributions of the many artists and the collectors and patrons who have helped build and shape America's premier collection of craft through their commitment and connoisseurship. Importantly, the exhibition highlights the Museum of Arts and Design's newly expanded mission and collecting policy, linking the fields of art, design, fashion, architecture, and interior design through the philosophy and practice of craft by craftspersons.
